Pawn Opening
仙人指路 · xiān rén zhǐ lù
The name is the best in xiangqi: the immortal points the way. A single soldier steps forward, nothing is attacked, and the whole move is a question addressed to your opponent. Show me your setup and I will choose mine. Underneath the poetry it is a genuinely useful move, because that soldier opens a path for a horse and takes a square away from Black, and you wanted both of those anyway.
The moves
1 move from the starting position. Step through them on the board.
- Red. A soldier advances one point. It threatens nothing, frees a route for the horse behind it, and hands Black the job of committing first.
A waiting move that is not a wasted move
Waiting moves only work when they improve something. This one does. The advanced soldier controls a point in Black's half, clears the file for a horse, and can become the screen a cannon jumps later.
So Black cannot simply wait back. Someone has to declare a structure, and the pawn push means it will not be Red.
The reply you must be ready for
Black's sharpest answer puts a cannon on the file of the soldier you just pushed, aiming at it from below. The games that follow are the most concrete in the whole pawn opening complex, and knowing a few of them is the price of playing this move.
If you would rather avoid the theory, meet it by taking the centre yourself and treating the advanced soldier as a bonus rather than something to defend.
Good habits in these positions
- Do not fall in love with the soldier. It is a tempo gainer, not an asset worth two moves.
- Decide your structure the moment Black declares theirs. Answering is the entire point of the move.
- Watch the file you opened. It cuts both ways once chariots appear.
Try it on a real board
Reading an opening and playing one are different skills. Set this line up against the computer, get it wrong a few times cheaply, then take it into a rated game.
Common questions
- What does 仙人指路 mean?
- The immortal points the way. It describes a single outstretched soldier showing a direction while the rest of the army waits.
- Is the Pawn Opening any good, or just charming?
- It is a respected, fully sound opening played at the top level. It gains space, frees the horse, and makes the opponent commit first.
- Which soldier should I push?
- Either of the two that open a horse's path. The theory mirrors, so pick the side your follow up plans live on.
