Central Cannon
中炮 · zhōng pào
One move, and the game already has a target. The Central Cannon slides a cannon to the middle file, where it looks all the way down the board at Black's General, and every piece Red develops afterwards has a job: keep that line open, add weight behind it, and make Black spend moves on defence instead of plans. It is the first move most strong players learn, the first move most of them still play, and the reason Black's half of opening theory exists at all.
The moves
1 move from the starting position. Step through them on the board.
- Red. Cannon to the middle file. Nothing is captured yet, because a cannon needs a piece to jump, but the line is aimed and Black has to answer it.
Why one move is worth a whole opening book
A cannon captures by jumping exactly one piece, so it is at its most dangerous while the board is crowded. On move one the board is as crowded as it will ever be. Put the cannon on the middle file and it is already looking through Black's central soldier at the General behind it.
That is the pressure. Black cannot ignore it, and every setup Black chooses is chosen with the middle file in mind. Red develops with a threat in hand instead of developing and hoping.
The plan after the first move
- Bring a horse to support the middle. The classic square guards the central soldier and turns a lone cannon into a battery.
- Get both chariots out. Chariots decide xiangqi games. A beautiful attacking cannon with sleeping chariots behind it loses to plain development.
- Push the central soldier when it opens lines, not because it looks active. That soldier is the screen your cannon jumps, so trading it too early turns your best piece into a spectator.
- Send a chariot across the river once Black's horses are committed, usually to hit whichever horse defends the middle.
What Black will play against you
Expect Screen Horses more than anything else. Black puts both horses where they defend each other in front of the General, and the structure that follows is the most analysed position in the game.
The sharper answers put a cannon of Black's own on the middle file, from the same wing or the opposite one. Those games get loud quickly, and the player who understands the plan usually beats the player who memorised a few more moves of it.
The mistake almost every beginner makes
Attacking with the cannon alone. One piece generates one threat, Black parries it, and now Red has an exposed cannon and no development. Count your chariots before you count your threats. If both are still at home on move eight, the attack is a bluff.
Try it on a real board
Reading an opening and playing one are different skills. Set this line up against the computer, get it wrong a few times cheaply, then take it into a rated game.
Common questions
- Is the Central Cannon the best first move in xiangqi?
- It is the most testing one and the most played at every level, but it is not winning by force. The Elephant Opening and the Horse Opening are completely sound alternatives that ask a quieter question.
- What is the best reply to the Central Cannon?
- Screen Horses is the main line and the safest practical choice. Black's horses defend one another, the General stays covered, and Black keeps a counterattack in reserve.
- Should a beginner play the Central Cannon?
- Yes. It teaches the two ideas that matter most early: open lines toward the enemy General, and develop the pieces that use them. Just play it with both chariots, not with the cannon alone.
